The dirty details about dog droppings.

Dog droppings are actually an environmental pollutant that can harm humans and animals.

TAMPA, Florida – We all love our puppies, but cleaning up after them seems like a chore some people choose not to do.

Yes, we are talking about doggie doo doo. It got so bad that a popular Tampa dog park had to be closed for days just for cleaning and sanitizing.

When you live downtown, a dog park like this is the perfect place to let your pet run and play, but being a good dog owner comes with important responsibilities as well.

Deputy Kotfila Memorial Dog Park in Tampa was closed a few weeks ago, so the city could do what irresponsible pet owners wouldn’t do … clean up after their pets.

“It’s actually going up pretty much every year, it’s just getting too mean,” Sue Chrzan said.

Chrzan is part of the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority, which built this huge dog park under the freeway, keeping pets and their owners in the shade and out of the rain and scorching sun.

“It took us all day to disinfect it, then we had to let it sit, then we pressure washed it again, let it sit, then we were able to open so two days of closure to basically clean up after the people who don’t have it cleaned. “

Dr Alex Higgins is a veterinarian at the Bayshore Veterinary Clinic.

“Canine droppings which we will call are actually classified by the Environmental Protection Agency as a pollutant because they can contain so many bacteria and even parasites.”

She says dog waste left behind can cause all kinds of problems. “Things like E. coli, salmonella, hookworms, roundworms. These are things that are contagious from dog to dog and they can affect the human population as well.”

Dr Higgins says dog waste is more of a problem than dog parks, it’s left everywhere.

It needs to be picked up even from your own garden because it can make you sick.

She also says that it doesn’t break down into fertilizer like other animal waste, and that it is high in nitrogen and can damage your grass and also affect our water supply.
