Veterinarian explains what pets are up to in their last moments
A South African vet has revealed what pets do in their last moments – and why you might want to be there when they die.
Warning: it can quickly get emotional. If you don’t mind crying a bit, read on.
In 2018, the vet in question left a heartfelt post on the Hillcrest Veterinary Hospital Facebook page, and it seemed to strike a chord with all pet owners, having since been shared more than 136,000 times.
The “tired heartbroken vet” said: “When you own a pet, it is inevitable, most of the time, that your pet will die before you do.”
They continued, “So if and when you need to take your pet to the vet for a humane, pain-free end, I want you all to know something.
“You’ve been the center of their world their entire lives.
“They might just be yours, but all they know is you as a family.
“It’s a shitty decision / day / hour / event every time, there’s no argument against it and it’s devastating for us humans to lose them.
“But please, I beg you, don’t let them. Don’t make them go through life and death in a strangers room in a place they don’t like.
“The thing you need to know, that most of you don’t know, is that they are looking for you when you leave them behind.
“They search every face in the room for their loved one.”
The vet continued, “They don’t understand why you left them when they are sick, scared, old or dying of cancer and they need your comfort.
“Don’t be a coward because you think it’s just too hard for you, imagine how they feel when you leave them in their most vulnerable time.
“People like me have to do my best every time to comfort them, make them less afraid and try to explain why you just couldn’t stay.”
This vet made me miss a pet that I never had.
However, like everything, there are two sides to every story, as one user pointed out in the comments section.
They wrote: “I’m not sure I agree with this post, sometimes the situations are very different. When my Gabi was very, very bad I left her in the hospital for an extra night and we didn’t know it was his last night. “
Heavy stuff, I know. Now go and kiss your pet.
